"cat is fat"
No, not ours. A cat in a book Ben read at school. He got off the bus on Friday with a case of the giggles and explained they had read a book about "-at" words. He had it in his backpack and pulled it out. The pages were things like "The bat sat." "The rat has a hat." The very last page was "The cat is fat". There was a picture of, of course, a fat cat. And Benjamin, for some reason, found that incredibly hilarious. He still cracks up when I ask him about it. Getting into his little head is always interesting! He even told me this whole long story about his teacher reading that page.
Lij and I were talking about his pal Allie a few days ago. Her mom and I have been playing phone tag because Allie wants to have Lij over. Lij wants to have Allie over..for a sweepover. Oh dear. I wish he could, I really do! Anyway her mom had told me that she has a July birthday and Elijah is at the very top of the list. I was telling Elijah that and I asked him if she is turning 7. His response was "Yes, I bewieve so."
He had a field trip this week to the children's theater in Minneapolis. I had to drop him off at the school in the morning at 7:45. His bestest teacher, Mrs. Klein, was loading things onto the bus and I told her that he had been sure to tell me that she was going with on the field trip. She responded that he was in her group (they give each adult a handful of kids to keep an eye on). I told her that he would be really happy with that because he loves her. She SIGHED and said "It's mutal. It's SOOO mutual. you are doing SUCH a wonderful job with him. he is SUCH a delightful boy."
I know I looked at her like she has 3 eyes and green hair. I just know it. Sorry, but he has been the biggest pain in my ass for the last few weeks. He is a big part of the reason I have not been posting. When I'm mad at one of them I have a hard time logging on and telling fun stories. I have been mad at him most evenings. He is more stubborn than either Brian or I and believe me...that is remarkable in either case. I'm glad to know he is "delightful" at school--I guess I'd rather have it that way than vice versa!
Wilsy is funny as always, if not more so. He is into riding the pink Trek Trike that we got Ben when he was 3. It's an awesome bike. He was riding it around yesterday and said to me, "Mommy, this trike? I like it."
He and I also watched a garbage truck go by when we were waiting for Ben to come on the bus one day. It passed and he said "I think I'll stay here because I don't want to get crushed by that." I agreed that would be wise. Then he added, "Last time I was scared it. But this time I don't think so."
He had his new best friend Andrew over to visit on Wednesday night and they had a very nice time together. All the kids enjoy Andrew and I think Andrew enjoys them too. William was very gentlemanly with his toys, graciously reminding Andrew that he had access to the trucks in the sandbox. They spent a long time together on the dock and beach watching fish and visiting about boats. I have some darling pictures to post and I will have to forward them from home and post them tomorrow night.
I took all 5 kids to the bounce depot last night and honestly I had more fun watching him than i would have myself. That's only partly because after 5 kids I piss when I jump. He goes down these huge 20 feet inflateable slides and bounces several feet in the air and flips and flops and shrieks and comes to a stop at the end with the biggest smile on his face. Oh, and when we were having a little debate the other day he called me Mr. Krabs.
Baby came with the bounce depot too and I was surprised but he loved it. I took him into a few of the inflatables and he loved being flopped all over by the big kid's bouncing. He also partook in the long tunnel toy for babies; he crawled through the length of it many times. When he got bored he would yell for Yaya. He has several new words this week; the one that comes to mind right now is "sock". That's a useful one, I guess.
And as for our big girl, she is 2 days away from being 9! She continues to be delightful and fun. She is forever writing books and plays. I happened to see one she was working on and noticed that she is using the word "nor" ("She had neither brothers nor sisters"). i was impressed with that as I don't think I used it til much later. She is very excited to now be working on division in math; math is not easy for her but she works very hard at it. She is SAD that the school year is ending. I just can't comprehend it (remembering my own elementary school years; I am sad about nursing school).

A Big Week
I just noticed how long it's been since I've posted--sorry about that. The primary reason is because my computer is being a turd. It's as old as Ana and she will be 9 in 2 weeks (which I do not like altogether that much). I guess it is time to replace it but I'm dragging my feet.
So, how has it been a big week? Well, for starters, as of today I'm a graduate nurse! I won't be licensed til I take and pass my boards (and I don't know yet when that will be, hopefully within weeks). But I have completed all requirements for my degree. This Thursday we will have a pinning ceremony, a small celebration for just our class, instructors, and our families. I can't believe I just did that. Wow! I brought little treats home for the kids today to thank them for being so patient with mommy and all the homework and absences. They were really great and so was Brian (mostly). I'll jump right into work on my RN but this should be an easier process logistically. I also got the job I wanted, on the unit I wanted, at the VA. Getting clearance to start is a major undertaking with the federal government. If you know me, they might call you, and I'm not kidding! However the job was offered and I took it, now all I have to do is pass the boards. I'm not too worried about those. OH--and I'm waiting for one last grade to be posted. If it is what I'm hoping it will be, then I will have made the Dean's List again this semester. Yes, I'm bragging shamelessly...haha :)
But I wasn't the only one with a big week. Ariana was the bravest girl in the world. She auditioned all by herself for a role in the play Pollyanna at the Paramount Theater in St. Cloud. She did fantastic! I couldn't believe how brave she was. She had to go into a big room with a bunch of other kids and the theater staff, and I couldn't go with. I had company, though. Wilson :) always guaranteed to make for a good time. So he and I were talking while we waited. I noticed his eyes are getting to look more brown like Brian's and less green like mine. I told him that, and he said "No, they're not brown." "Oh," I said, "do you think they are still green?" "No, they're pink, you doofus!"
(that was not sarcasm, he was being silly!)
She was in there for about an hour and when all the kids came piling out, she came toward us with the biggest, happiest, proudest smile on her dimpled face! She was thrilled with how the audition had gone. She enjoyed the process, which is what I wanted her to do. She was excited because she kept getting asked to do more things for the "auditioners" (whatever you call them).
Tonight they had another set of auditions and tomorrow they will post some call-backs (I guess that means people they want to look more closely at). Friday they will post a final cast list. If you don't get a call-back, it doesn't mean you didn't get a part.
Now, seriously, because this was her first audition and there were so many kids there who seemed experienced, I doubt she will get a part. However, I do think that she will keep doing this (she begged to!) and each time she will be more confident and more skilled and eventually, yes, she is going to be in a play at the Paramount! I made her promise me she wouldn't be too disappointed by not getting a part, and she seemed sincere in her agreement.
While we were there, something funny happened here. Elijah had a boy scout meeting and I had asked his friend Noah's dad to pick him up because Brian would be here with all the other boys. So I get this email from Brian that Elijah and Ben were at the meeting. ?? Turns out he had sent Ben with Noah's parents too! No matter, Ben loved it, and is eager to be a scout next year himself. Won't that be cute, two boy scouts in blue uniforms? One bacat and one woof!
Elijah has a rash on his back tonight and we were wondering what it might be from and he got silly and said "I know! Maybe Allie touched me too much!". Ana thought that was hilarious. He didn't meant it the way it sounded; they play around like first graders, with pushing and shoving and all that. But it was cute.
We have a new hairdo. Ben looks like a two week old yard with one strip of mowing. But he does not know who cut his hair. It was somebody else, but he doesn't remember. Hmmmm. And get this...Henry told his mom that Ben looked wierd today! Hahahahahaha!
Baby is now officially into everything. He is pulling my tupperware out and bringing it all over the house. He also is "driving" his cars. Turning into a little boy! He says bye bye when he waves, and looks at the door. Sigh. They grow up so fast. No, don't worry, I won't have another one.
Speaking of having a lot of kids, though; tonight as I was tucking everyone in to their communal dorm (in Ariana's room) William was being stubborn about sleeping with Rah in her bed. I wasn't going to let him but the little turd just tucked himself in with his blanked. So then Ben and Lij want to know why HE gets to sleep with their sister. I told him he is very spoiled to get to do that. And then I addressed a big beaming face beside him and said "Actually, Ana, sometimes I think YOU are the spoiled one!". And she very quickly admitted, "Yes, me and
Zac!"

lambs....doofus
They are not really connected. Just two of the themes I'll post about right now!
It's been a busy couple days---as usual, I guess. With 5 kids it's rarely a boring couple of days. Especially when one of those 5 kids is William. Guaranteed a laugh a day, even when he is driving you nuts.
Today Elijah had a well child check (he still calls them "wild child checks" in all seriousness). He is doing very well and amazingly he has jumped off the top of the growth chart for height (over the 100th percentile). This is a big surprise because even though we knew he had grown a ton, he has historically been small to average. Now I know where all that food is going! I suspect we will have similar news when Ben has his checkup after September.
Following the wild child check, we had to stop at the tech college to drop off a take home test with a teacher. I drove around a bit looking for the best spot and I heard a chirp from the backseat (from the guy who can't talk) "JUST PARK!". (for those of you who don't know William, you must know that even though a lot of these comments sound bratty, they really don't sound that way when he says them--he delivers his lines with great humor).
So I turned around to see him and....he had my make up bag out and "his" makeup on. It almost matched his nail polish, except the mascara was on his eyebrows instead of his eyelashes, and he had used his lipstick for rouge. I haven't seen anyone do that for a long time. Joan used to do that. So then I had to take him into the nursing office with me. We stopped in the bathroom and I did what I could but as I did not have Oil of Olay handy he pretty much had to be a hussy for the rest of the day. Fortunately the nursing instructors are all moms and lots of them are/were pediatric nurses, so they thought he was a hoot.
After the appointment we went to Target. While there William kep asking for toys and I would always say "No, too expensive." So then I would suggest something much cheaper and he would close his eyes so daintily, smirk, and mimic me "No, too 'spensive."
He also informed me that we were not in Target. We argued for a bit until I asked "well, where are we then?". And William said, "In a store, doofus!"
Now, granted, THAT is darn bratty, but again the delivery was hysterical. Lij cracked up out loud and I couldn't stifle it either. So the comedian crossed his arms and smiled smugly. So I'm a doofus.
Tonight he made his first real friend! First, some background on Ana.
She is fascinated by theater, in large part because Joanie has been taking her to plays at the Paramount for a long time. She also wants to be on stage and sing and do all that stuff I'd rather die than do. It's interesting because she is very shy. She is signed up for two theater camps this summer (there are many good, affordable options for that around here-it's great). Over the weekend Joanie took Ariana and Ben to Seussical the Musical and Ariana came home excited about two upcoming plays, Pollyanna and Peter Pan. She asked if she could audition. The plan was to allow her to try that in the fall after she has had more theater training. I was hesitant, but she was persistent. I did some research and from what I have read, it is a non-threatening environment...so I said she could.
This required printing off sheet music and learning some of it. Obviously I am not the parent to do that. Obviouslier Brian is not either. We had a hard time coming up with an idea for who could play it for her on the piano. Joanie had the great idea to ask her friend Lisa, who lives on a farm and has baby lambs and is an excellent musician. Lisa agreed, and so tonight myself and my crew headed out to the farm near Kimball. First we had a tour and got to hold the baby lambs. Now we all think we need some. The funniest part of the evening was that they are bottlefeeding a newborn whose Mommy has the maternal insticts of Brittany Spears, and Zac WANTED THAT BOTTLE. "BAH! BAH!" (That was Zac, not the sheep).
But the bestest part, besides that Ana got to play the piano and hear Lisa sing, was that William made his very first buddy. Andrew just turned 3 (he signs this by holding up 2 fingers) and is an only child so it was an awful lot of company for him and he was just the perfect gentleman. He even shared his poop-in-the-potty reward stickers with his visitors. He has a room full of tractors and hotwheels! He shared sooo good...I was really impressed. How the heck can mine have 4 siblings each and not be as good at sharing as he is?
I really wish I'd had my camera with, because these guys visited. On the swingset they were talking about if Andrew's truck is broken or not. In the house they talked about toy tractors and Andrew told funny jokes that only William understood.
We were offered tractor rides but Ben was the only one who accepted. The others chickened out. Leave it to my Boo to be the brave one!
Andrew conducted most of the tour, I think. " That's poop". "That's my tractor" "That's my dad".
As we pulled away after a fun and productive evening, I heard from the backseat "When can Andrew and the lamb come over to our house?"
One last thing to end the post with a laugh. Zac has two little rubber duckies from Ana. He now holds them and says "quack quack". Yes, Zac Jack quacks.

spring
It seems it might finally be here--but I shouldn't say that, just in case.
Wil and Ben had a vacation at Grandma's house this week. It was a spur of the moment thing and they were gone for 3 days. They had a great time and got very spoiled! On their last night there they had an adventure....a big black bear walked across grandma and grandpa's yard in daylight. Grandpa said it's because there isn't enough for them to eat so they are foraging closer to people. William told me it walked over to Hans' house. I asked him if it ate Hans and he said "Yes. Yes it did." (oh dear!)
He has discovered that our phone has an auto dial number for Grandma and Grandpa so ever since he returned home he has been taking advantage of that. He has requested that he go back there on Tuesday. Grandma is to pick him up. A recent phone conversation as reported by Grandma later:
William: "Where is Papa?"
Grandma: "Papa is in the garage."
"Why is Papa in the garage?"
"He is cleaning the garage."
"Why is he cleaning the garage?"
"Because it is dirty."
"Why is it dirty?"
And ad infinitum.
The whole adventure started with William asking me Tuesday morning "Mommy, will you bring me to Grandma's house?". It was just too cute to resist and Grandma happened to be off enough days to have them.
Keep in mind this is the boy who meowed at his preschool screening and the lady asked me if he could talk.
Benjamin just told me "if the titanic was in our lake it would go all the way across". Well, yes indeed I suspect it would. Even more interesting to think about is that it would rest on the bottom and a goodly portion of it would be above water, with the depth of Big Fish being 20 feet if I recall correctly. If I'm wrong I'd say it's 40, and the titanic is still more than 40 feet tall--by a lot. Too bad the Titanic wasn't in Big Fish Lake when it hit an iceberg, most of those people would still be alive. These kids really make you think about useless stuff.
